i2X: advancing a unified EHR format to improve healthcare across Europe

With support from the Digital Europe Programme, the ambitious i2X project officially launched on 1 April 2025. The project aims to develop a single, unified data exchange format for electronic health records across Europe. This format is crucial for both primary use of data (focused on patient care) and secondary use (in policymaking, research, innovation, and more).

i2X puts this new format — the European Electronic Health Record Exchange Format (EEHRxF), also known as the “X-Format” — to the test in real-world settings, across 14 pilot sites in 10 EU countries.

Amaron, in collaboration with Ghent university hospital, is one of the 38 partners participating in this initiative.

Through the intelligent implementation of the EEHRxF standard, along with advanced IT solutions and AI-driven technologies, all partners aim to demonstrate that digital data exchange really works — without adding extra burden on healthcare professionals. In the long run, this should pave the way for broad, rapid adoption of the standard.

Over the next four years, more than 1,200 healthcare providers across 12 EU Member States will be involved.

The result? Together, as healthcare professionals and patients, we’ll benefit from more accessible and higher-quality health data in electronic health records — both nationally and across borders.

You’ll be hearing more from this project soon!
