Cerba streamlines colon cancer screening process with Workflower and Mirth Connect

Bevolkingsonderzoek darmkanker

On 3 January 2025, Cerba HealthCare Belgium achieved an important milestone. That day, the laboratory began analysing all samples sent in, on behalf of the Centre for Cancer Screening (CVKO), as part of Flanders’ Population Screening for Colorectal Cancer. This amounts to as many as 2,000 a day. It was therefore logical for Cerba to automate this process as much as possible. That important task fell to Workflower, in combination with Mirth® Connect.

Now, the laboratory staff scans the barcodes of the samples and the corresponding order forms in the morning. They register the samples in batches with a single click in Workflower and then place the tubes in the analysers.

From that point on, nearly the entire process runs automatically:

  1. The machines analyse the samples and send the results via Mirth Connect to Workflower, where they are linked to the correct barcode.
  2. Three times a day, a quality control is carried out to check that the analysers are functioning properly. If the QC result is OK, the analyser results are validated in batch.
  3. At the end of the day, two CSV files are generated and transferred to the CVKO: one with all validated results and a second with any non-conformities (missing tubes or forms, or empty samples). The CVKO communicates the results to the individuals concerned.
  4. Workflower provides a list of the final results for invoicing purposes. At any time, Cerba can also retrieve a list with the complete history of all investigations.

“The tool’s remarkable flexibility allows us to seamlessly adapt the workflow to our specific organisational needs, while its efficiency reduces administrative overhead to a minimum. The speed of developing and implementing the solution has been remarkable, even with the very tight deadlines.”
Joachim Vandroemme, Managing Director, Cerba HealthCare Belgium

“What sets Workflower apart is its tailor-made approach. The solution was meticulously designed to address the unique challenges of the colon cancer screening program, making it an indispensable tool within our lab. Throughout the entire process, our collaboration with the Amaron team was extremely professional.”
Cedric Raket, Head of IT, Cerba HealthCare Belgium
